How the nose leads the nervous system

Breathe in the present and breathe out illusion.

Breath as a bridge

Long before meditation apps and coaches offering entire courses existed, breath was what it always was: the first and last companion in life. Powerful enough to shape and change thoughts.

Our breath is the most accessible and most underestimated tool for self-regulation – the only function of the autonomic nervous system that can be voluntarily controlled. And when you do that, you gain access to systems that are normally beyond conscious control: heart rate, digestion, stress response, and immune activity.

In the sauna, this very tool is crucial. Because as the air gets hotter, the rhythm of our breath helps us face the heat.

Nose Intelligence

Science is rediscovering what yogis have long practiced: the nose is neurologically superior to the mouth. Nasal breathing increases nitric oxide levels, thereby ensuring better oxygen supply and vascular health. It filters, warms, and humidifies the incoming air – and that's precisely what's indispensable during heat exposure in a sauna.

Nasal breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system. It also slows down the breathing rate, promotes CO2 tolerance, and improves stress resistance. Mouth breathing, on the other hand, triggers sympathetic excitation: faster heartbeat, more anxiety, less efficiency. How you breathe thus significantly determines the mood of your nervous system. In the sauna, you'll notice it immediately: those who breathe through their nose stay longer, calmer, and more present.

Breathing traditions across cultures

Breathing as a ritual is ancient. Pranayama, the yogic breath regulation, knows patterns for every effect: warming, cooling, energizing, and calming. In Zen, breath is the anchor that brings consciousness into the present. In Tummo meditation, Tibetan monks use breath and visualization to raise body temperature – inner fire, literally. Nordic winter swimmers use breath as armor against the cold.

No matter which of these cultural techniques you look at, they all have one thing in common: breathing can change our state. And from within.

Breathe. Hold. Release. Repeat.

4-4-4-4 Box Breathing for your next sauna session:

  • Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds
  • Hold for 4 seconds
  • Breathe out through your nose for 4 seconds
  • Hold for 4 seconds
  • Repeat 3–5 rounds

This technique stabilizes oxygen and CO2 balance, brings clarity, and calms the mind. A breathing structure that specifically promotes presence – and is therefore equally used by special forces and professional athletes.

The sauna as a breathing chamber

When steam rises and heat condenses the air, the sauna becomes a veritable breathing cosmos. For while time in the heat seems to stretch, breathing begins to show us something that usually remains hidden from us by mere thinking.

  • Shallow breath: Tension.
  • Held breath: Fear.
  • Chaotic breath: Resistance.

A final thought

Spiritus means both breath and spirit in Latin. Remember that the next time you go to the sauna: Don't just sit there, but breathe mindfully and consciously. And if you succeed, you will notice that not only your body exhales, but your mind does too.
