The shortcut to feeling
Our sense of smell is neurologically unique. It bypasses the thalamus (the brain's sorting center) and directly reaches the olfactory cortex, in close proximity to the limbic system - the control center for emotions, memory, and instinct. This also explains why a hint of pine scent immediately transports us to a childhood forest, or why lavender relaxes muscles before you consciously register it. The reaction, therefore, doesn't rely on logic. Instead, our body remembers something before our mind even begins to process it.
Aromatic Molecules & Emotional Codes
Essential oils are not composed of single substances. They are complex mixtures of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – small molecules that quickly enter the body through inhalation and influence neurochemical processes.
Studies on many substances are conclusive: Linalool, a main component of lavender oil, reduces stress responses. 1,8-Cineole in eucalyptus oil supports respiratory function and improves cognitive performance in attention-based tasks. α-Pinene in conifers has anti-inflammatory effects and promotes memory. Citral in citrus oils invigorates and has antimicrobial potential.
Although all of this is peer-reviewed, measurable, and replicable, it is often dismissed as esoteric.
What happens in the heat
High temperatures dilate capillaries, increase skin permeability, and accelerate absorption through the lungs. Our entire system becomes more open. Essential oils work more intensely in the sauna because heat and humidity open pores and deepen breathing.
A neurochemical chain reaction occurs:
- Endorphins rise: pain relief, euphoria occurs
- Cortisol falls: stress decreases, feelings of anxiety dissolve
- Serotonin stabilizes: lasting calm occurs
The brain under scent
The olfactory bulb is one of the few brain regions that can form new neurons in adulthood. Our sense of smell can be trained, sharpened, and expanded through mindful use, ritualistic repetition, and aromatic diversity.
And: scent creates spatio-temporal maps in the brain. Each complex aroma activates a unique pattern of neurons. Theoretically, over a trillion scents can be distinguished this way.
Scent as evolutionary intelligence
Our ancestors relied on smell long before language. The sense of smell played an important role in hunting, warned of spoilage, and influenced mate selection. Even today, pheromone-like molecules in sweat or natural oils subconsciously contribute to trust, bonding, and attraction.
In forests, trees release monoterpenes: α-pinene and limonene. They boost mood and immunity and even shape cloud formation through interaction with atmospheric particles. Scent is thus an ecological, emotional, and evolutionary layer of intelligence that we can consciously develop further.
Your body already knew
Even if you don't understand why eucalyptus sharpens or cedar grounds – your body reacts to it even without this knowledge. A ritual can help us become aware of exactly that. The heat of the sauna also makes it physically palpable.
